From Publishers Weekly
Popular Bible teacher Arthur, cofounder of Precept Ministries, traces the idea of God's covenant from the Old and New Testaments to its meaning for people in the 20th century. She begins by reflecting on the first sign of God's covenant with humankind in the story of Noah and the flood. She then explores the ramifications of the covenant relationship between David and Jonathan, before focusing her attention on Jesus Christ as the mediator of the New Covenant. She notes, "A covenant relationship supersedes all other relationships. If you are in covenant with Jesus Christ, you are in covenant with One who is God." Using anecdotes from her own ministry experiences as well as a deep reading of Scriptures, Arthur explains the seriousness of making a covenant, especially in an age she sees as marked by casual commitments and broken promises. While readers will benefit from the depth of her study, her saccharine and manipulative style will put off many readers. For example, Arthur notes, "Beloved Christ laid down his life for you... His potential covenant partner, and you are to do the same." Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.
Book Description
SOMEONE LOVES YOU. UNCONDITIONALLY. UNSHAKABLE, UNFAILINGLY. That Someone is God Himself. But how can that be possible? Why would God love you so? Because He has fashioned an unbreakable covenant between Himself and you. And He always keeps His promises. “Everything God does,” says Kay Arthur, “is based on His covenant.” And when you understand how thoroughly the dynamic concept of covenant permeates everything God says in His Word, and everything He does in our lives, you’ll come to experience one of the most stabilizing, most freeing truths you’ll ever know.
In a culture in which unfaithfulness is rampant, God’s “fierce, ferocious loyalty” toward us is difficult to imagine. And yet, through her characteristically warm and wise exploration of the Scripture, Kay Arthur will lead you into discovering the stunning truth of God’s covenant–and help you experience its revolutionary truth in your life.
The Bible reveals the covenant bond to be the highest personal relationship possible. In ancient times, covenants were solemn, binding agreements supremely honored above all others. Making a covenant represented an unqualified, total commitment of one person to another–unconditionally, totally, eternally.
As you follow the thread of God’s covenant woven throughout the Bible, you’ll discover the awesome privilege of getting to know the Lord as your Covenant God.

Colossians - Children
We ought to differentiate b/w commands & wishes of our parents.
We are only told to obey the commands/instructions of our parents AS FAR AS it is right before God. We have no mandate to obey the wishes of our parents. (But we can choose to fulfil their wishes if we love them)
(You are right when you foresee the possible outcomes of such commandment. True, children can turn out to become like their parents if they follow wholesale without any discretion, esp when they don’t know God’s standard. Selfish parents may produce selfish children.)
Due to the potential of undesirable outcomes, it is precisely why establishing a godly family needs 2 individuals who love God, study God’s Word to obey & filled with God’s power to fulfil their duties.
Having said that, I must remind you we are told to pray for our authority (1Tim 2:2).
If our obedience to God is linked to our obedience to our parents BEFORE we get married, then only God can ensure that whatever commands they give you are reasonable &, if not, only God can change their hearts towards you.
